Summertime temperatures are here to stay for a couple of months, and your home comfort is important! Imagine being at home on a sweltering hot day with an air conditioner that’s malfunctioning, or even worse, broken down completely.
We do our best to ensure our customers aren’t caught off guard by surprise AC repair needs, through professional and reliable performance maintenance each spring. It’s up to you to get that on your schedule though! Maintenance allows our technicians to fully inspect, clean, and adjust the HVAC components that need it to ensure that your system works as efficiently and effectively as possible, for as long as possible.
Of course, wear and tear happens, and while that’s part of the reason maintenance is needed, it’s true that repair needs can pop up between tune-ups. This is why it’s important for you to know the signs that your air conditioner is in disrepair. Unsure of what these signs might be? Read on!
Your System Is Louder Than Usual or Making Unfamiliar Noises
There are some noises you’re always going to hear coming from your centralized air conditioner. This will include the humming of the compressor as the system runs, the fans blowing and the motors starting up and shutting down, plus even a gentle rattle of ductwork as the temperature inside it fluctuates.
What you shouldn’t hear, however, is anything outside of the normal day-to-day noises you’re used to. This can including clanging, banging, hissing, intense or growing rattling sounds, screeching, or squealing. Each of these is indicative of a different potential problem, and is worth giving us a call about.
There’s a Lack of Cold Air or Poor Airflow
Take a walk around your home, and put your hands in front of the vents as the air conditioner is running. Does it seem like the air isn’t as cold as it should be? Or perhaps it’s cold, but the airflow isn’t very powerful?
First, check to make sure that your air conditioner isn’t on “fan-only” mode. It may be that someone with different cooling preferences in your home set it there, or perhaps even you did it on accident. Next, check and see if the air filter is clear. A clogged-up air filter will restrict airflow and can prevent enough cooled air from entering your home.
If you’ve checked on both of these things and you’re still experiencing the problem, it’s time to give us a call. You could have a refrigerant leak, damaged ductwork, and/or a malfunctioning compressor.
Your Energy Bills Are Higher Than Normal
Please take a look at your utility bills and compare them to this same time last year, or compare them to what your neighbors are paying for similar energy use. If yours are drastically higher, it’s a sign that something in the home is working inefficiently, and it could very well be your air conditioner to blame. After all, HVAC systems account for about half of all the energy used in the average home.
